Becoming a Visiting Pet Team

*Handler must be at least 16 years old. Dog must be at least 1 year old and have lived in your household for 6 months.

  1. Attend a New Member’s Orientation meeting held on the second Saturday at 9:30 a.m. of each month (except July and December).  See below for meeting location.

    We will go over the requirements for you and your dog in detail. We would love to meet your dog at this meeting!

     

  2. Have your pet’s health screened by a veterinarian.

    Must be in good health, have current immunizations and be completely heart worm free.

     

  3. Ensure that your pet knows basic obedience skills on command: sit, down, come, stay, etc.

    Also, your pet must not be aggressive towards other animals or people and must not bark or can be silenced on command. Must be friendly to all people and want to visit people.Obedience classes are offered locally.

     

  4. Schedule and attend a scenario training.

    This training will compliment your obedience training. 

  5. Visit Pet Partners website and sign up and complete Pet Partners training course offered in an easy online format  https://petpartners.org/

  6. Pass Pet Partner’s Evaluation (Skills and Aptitude) with your pet. Register online at https://petpartners.org

  7. Go online to complete registration packet and submit to Pet Partners.

After you receive your temporary identification badge, you will be paired with an Environmental Leader in the facilities you wish to visit. She/he will schedule one shadow visit and one observing visit. Once these visits have been successfully completed, you will be free to visit on your own or in a group.

Meetings are held at Gulfport Memorial Hospital's South Building Room 5.
